When growing Acacia trees indoors, repot into a slightly larger container, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 2. Water well and position in full sun. Outdoors, plant directly into borders in any acid or neutral, free draining soil. Choose a sheltered position in full sun; a site against a south facing wall is ideal in milder areas. In frost prone areas grow mimosa in a cool conservatory or in a container which can be moved indoors over winter. Feed and water regularly.
Once established, mimosa is fairly drought tolerant and plants grown outdoors will require less attention. Acacia particularly dislikes hard pruning. After flowering prune lightly to maintain its shape. In winter, move container grown plants to a frost free position. In mild areas Mimosa may be overwintered outdoors if grown in sheltered borders and offered some winter protection. Repot container grown plants into increasingly larger pots as they increase in size.
