Species are the original geraniums that modern geraniums originated from. Originating from South Africa, these plants were brought over to Europe by the early botanists and medicinal explorers. Geraniums were ideal as they were drought tolerant and so could survive the lengthy journeys at sea. The original species were called 'zonale' hence you will often hear modern geraniums referred to as zonals.
